In partnership with Creative youth network, Bristol Somali youth voice have organized a trip for young people from Barton Hill and Easton to visit Bristol Zoo prject at Cribbs Causeway in Bristol. This excursion provided a wonderful opportunity for them to step outside their usual environment, engage with nature, and explore a diverse range of animals in the zoo.
The visit aimed to enhance their understanding of biodiversity, conservation, and sustainability in a hands-on setting. Throughout the day, the young people were able to interact with various animals, including some rare species they had never seen before. For many, it was their first time visiting a zoo, and the experience left a lasting impression.
The trip also allowed young people to participate in structured activities and group discussions, where they shared their reflections and learnings about the animals and their habitats. The visit was not only educational but also enjoyable.
We have offered young people a hot meal during the visit, the beauty of natural environment positively contributed relaxation.
Mohamed Kayse, youth worker from Bristol Somali youth voice said, “This outing was particularly significant given the ongoing cost of living crisis, which makes it challenging for many families to afford holidays. By offering these experiences, we aim to provide positive, memorable activities during the school holidays, especially for young people who are underrepresented in accessing the green space and nature.
Young people have enjoyed the trip and Here is verbatim comment from young person who participate the Trip to the zoo.
Young person said:
it was my first time visiting the zoo, and the experience was very positive. I saw animals that I never imagined lived here, which made the trip an exciting new experience. It was great to step out of the city, away from my usual surroundings in Barton Hill, and spend time in a place like the zoo. Walking through the green spaces and enjoying the beauty of nature was truly refreshing.
The zoo itself is enormous, and it was very relaxing to walk through such a large area. I come here with friends who participate in the Thursday sessions at the crypt, which is currently at Netham park, and we spent time together, asking questions about the animals, and sharing experiences during our walk. We also ate together, the trip was well-structured, educational, and a lot of fun. I personally had a great time and really enjoyed the experience.
As a British and Somali voice, we are committed to continuing providing positive experience for young people during school holiday, and deepening their connection with nature.
Special thanks for Carl from Creative youth network, and our team, especially Mohamed, Kayse and Hibo.
