Our trips are positive, educational, and give young people interactive experiences.

Today we organised a trip to Bristol Zoo, which proved to be a very positive and memorable experience for the young people. It gave them the opportunity to step outside their usual environment, visit the zoo, and engage with nature and a wide variety of animals. For some, it was their very first time visiting the zoo, making it a truly special experience.

The visit helped young people deepen their understanding of biodiversity, conservation, and sustainability in a hands-on setting through discussions, observations. They interacted with different species — including some rare animals they had never seen before, they also participated different structured activities, group discussions, and reflected their experience about the Trip and what this visit mean to them.

We also provided a hot meal and other enriching activities, which contributed to a relaxed and positive atmosphere.

Ali, a youth worker from Bristol Somali Youth Voice, said:

“The trip was very positive. It allowed young people to go beyond their local area, explore a major attraction in their own city, learn about nature, and have something exciting and positive to talk about during the school holidays. Without this opportunity, many would have spent their days in and around their residential area.”

One young person reflected:

“It was my first time visiting the zoo. I saw animals I never imagined lived here, which made it exciting. It was great to step away from my area, school, and home, and spend time with friends. Walking through the green spaces and large trees was relaxing and refreshing — the beauty of nature was easy to see.”

At Bristol Somali Youth Voice, we are committed to creating opportunities like this for young people, especially those who are underrepresented in accessing nature. Trips like this are vital, as many families are unable to afford holidays due to the increasing  cost of living.

We extend our sincere thanks to the youth workers, volunteers, parents, and young people who took part and helped make this day a success.
